Opportunity Intelligence vs Decision Intelligence
Decision Intelligence helps optimize a decision you know you have to make. Opportunity Intelligence helps identify decisions and actions you may not realize are available. Here's the difference, with examples.
Decision Intelligence helps optimize a decision you know you have to make. Opportunity Intelligence helps identify decisions and actions you may not realize are available.
Both categories sit downstream of ordinary analytics, and both aim to make a business act better, not just report better. The difference is where each one starts. Decision Intelligence assumes someone has already identified a decision, such as which vendor to choose or which price to set or which candidate to hire, and helps them make it well, often by combining data, models, and simulation. Opportunity Intelligence assumes the harder problem is upstream of that: most valuable decisions are never identified in the first place, because nobody thought to look. The two overlap and cooperate more than they compete.
| Dimension | Decision Intelligence | Opportunity Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A known decision that needs to be made | An unknown decision that hasn't been noticed yet |
| Core question | What is the best choice here? | Is there a choice worth making at all? |
| Typical output | A recommendation, simulation, or optimized choice | A ranked, evidenced candidate for attention |
| Example | Which of these three pricing tiers should this customer get? | This customer's usage suggests they're ready for a pricing conversation nobody has started. |
| When it runs | When a person opens the tool with a decision in mind | Continuously, in the background, independent of anyone asking |
When you need which
If your team already knows the decision it's facing and just wants to make it better, such as optimizing a supply chain route or choosing between financing options, Decision Intelligence is the right tool. If your concern is that valuable decisions are going unnoticed entirely, such as an account quietly ready to churn, a feature request three customers have independently made, or a renewal nobody flagged, that's the gap Opportunity Intelligence is built to close.
The two are complementary rather than competing: an Opportunity Intelligence system that surfaces "this customer looks ready for an upsell" hands off to a Decision Intelligence-style process (or a person) to work out exactly what to offer and at what price. Opportunity Intelligence does not make Decision Intelligence obsolete. It can sit above it and decide when it's worth invoking at all.
